NEWS - New installation @ Cacaofabriek

Working on my brand new video installation 'Enlightened' (more about it here, soon!), I would like to kindly invite you to the Nederlandsche Cacaofabriek in Helmond for my next show.

Enlightened is a two-channel video projection for two beamers, four large windows, and an infinite number of real- and artificial shadows.
Besides, you can enjoy works of Jarik Jongman, Frits Peeters, Michael Lehmann and Leonie Kuipers.

Vernissage is on November 6 at 14h, the exhibition is open until December 18.

*Enlightened (2011) - video installation

In this project I mix reality and imagination in a delicate, yet confusing way: I show the invisible layers of the environment by evoking Plato's famous cave and the idea of illusions. The core of the installation is the beamer, which both projects shadows onto the windows and, just like an artificial "fire", enlightens the whole hall at the same time. This way visitors can become part of the projected image, since their shadows are no different from those in the movie for an outsider. By using the windows as screens, the interior and the public space melts together and becomes one space.

The installation has been made especially for De Nederlandsche Cacaofabriek in Helmond. The video is based upon the performance of Leonie Kuipers in the site, during the vernissage in 2011 november.

Exciting news - Monitoring is in the screening program of OK.Video - Jakarta International Video Festival in October.

OK. Video is a biannual video festival held since 2003 by ruangrupa, an artists' initiative in Jakarta, Indonesia. This year's theme is flesh - as a metaphor of biological entity of the human body that transforms into digital entity through the advancement of audiovisual technology.

NEWS - In Movement: opening exhibition in the new home of Spiritusz Gallery

Spiritusz Gallery is moving to the former Várfok Hall in Várfok street, to achieve a concentrated cooperation and to level it up. Várfok Gallery Group (Várfok Gallery, Spiritusz Gallery and Gallery19) are to be found from now on in one single street. The idea of this evolution has initiated the concept of the next group exhibition of Spiritusz Gallery (the opening exhibition) entitled In Movement, revealing the dissimilar viewpoints and mixed media of its artists - painters, photographers and sculptors - who now all have reflected in their works to the theme of movement.

As a consequence of the lack of any lights we are accommodated to, there would not exist any phenomenon related to it such as shadows, colors, reflections, refractions, which normally help our orientation in the surrounding world. Without lights we are kind of blinded even with senses in good health, in such an environment human eyes seem to be useless.
In -384THz (which referres to the lowest limit of electromagnetic waves human eyes are able to perceive) I rebuilt a monochrome world and simulated dark, smoky "anti-light" to expose how human perception reacts on reversed materials which means, in this case the opposite of lights. The result is very similar to the ultrasound and other images based on electromagnetic waves - we can exclusively perceive the depth of the environment and only at the spots where the waves surrounds the objects.
I have been investigating the optical phenomena that characterize our world since 2007 by simulating the opposites of some well-known illusions. This video is the newest piece of the series.

As every year, Várfok Gallery will participate the Budapest Art Fair this November. Similarly to last year, Spiritusz Gallery, subdivision of Várfok Gallery, will be present with an individual booth next to Várfok Gallery's. Pécs is the fifth largest city of Hungary, located on the slopes of the Mecsek mountains in the south-west of the country, close to its border with Croatia. The city has long and remarkable history, and was founded by Romans at the beginning of the 2nd century. Since Pécs has been selected to be the European Capital of Culture in 2010, several events has been organized all over the city.
Source, my public art installation is one of the 21 projects, realized between the frameworks of 21 dialogues public art festival, supported by the University of Pécs, Faculty of Fine Arts.
Thanks to the numerous historical remains, one can feel the past (and time, generally) very intensely, while staying in the city. This time, I imagined Time as a living organism, laying under our feet. I wanted to objectify its existence by transforming it into an organic system, so I built up a huge vascular system of long, transparent silicon tubes and infusion bottles in a small garden in the downtown, called Kultúrkert. Since the infusion sets I used are adjustable, the colored water circulated in different speeds, and strengthened the impression of a living being. The installation acted as an island in the city, visitors usually could not just pass by, they interacted many ways with the installation.

The perception of the known, surrounding universe has its own rules. We live with these rules to orientate ourselves in the world around. But what happens if we just simulate another kind of perception?

In Time-Gravitation 1.0, which is the second piece of the video series, I focus on the phenomenon of the so-called optical flow - the pattern of apparent motion of objects in a visual scene caused by the relative motion between an observer and the scene. This time I take apart the well-known landscape, analyze it and rebuild a totally new universe by using reversed rules for the apparent speed of motion. We face this extraordinary universe, and enter right into its center, where viewers are "gravitated" and absorbed by the surrounding space.

The realisation of the project has been supported by the National Cultural Fund, Department of Fine Arts.

NEWS - 21 dialogues in Pécs, ECC 2010

From 12 to 26 June, 21 public art installation can be discovered all over the city of Pécs. My newest public art installation, the Forrás/Source, located at the Kultúrkert, is one of the realized projects, supported by the organizer University of Pécs, Faculty of Visual Arts and Music. Each project is expected to reflect on current social and cultural problems and involve locals by some kind of interaction.

NEWS - Time-Gravitation 1.0 Freshly Launched

Time-Gravitation 1.0, a brand-new video installation, has just been set up in a black box of the Spiritusz Gallery. From the 1st till the 11th of June, we can experience an alternative universe of perception simply by laying down and letting the video to reach our senses. The visitors of the vernissage should expect some extraordinary sound experience from the musicians: Endre Kertész (cello) and Szabolcs Veres (live electronics) at 18h. See you there!

NEWS - Impulso & Crescendo Vernissage

You are cordially invited on Thursday March 25th 2010, at 18h to the opening of the group exhibition entitled Impulso at Várfok Gallery's Várfok Hall. At the show, part of the exhibition series organized to celebrate Várfok Gallery's 20th birthday, the artists of Spiritusz Gallery - including me among others - respond to some of Várfok Gallery's artists' oeuvres. A part of the exhibited works will be shown at Várfok Gallery's Várfok Hall, the other at Spiritusz Gallery, both until April 29th 2010. Spiritusz Gallery opens its exhibition parallel to Várfok Gallery's on the same day, from 19h. Crescendo is another part of the jubilee exhibition series which opens at the same time as Impulso, at Várfok Gallery's XO Hall, and presents Várfok Gallery's entire permanent circle of artists.

I deal with the problem of vision and perception in the Monitoring video installation again. What do we actually see and what factors have an influence on the processing of images we perceive? The so-called 4D sonograms have become very popular among today's young parents. This kind of visualization have been known only from the world of sci-fi so far - how are those blurry, damaged and occasionally frightening pictures able to generate any warm emotions after all? In this video I investigate the limits of perception by using the sonogram images as a start-up. The fetus has been replaced by a passively lying, grown-up human, who is slowly being scanned by the nosy lens of the camera. However, the disturbing pictures provoke certain reactions from the viewer: slowly human parts can be seen in the mass of senseless distortion. We see what we do want to see, and mostly it seems to be another human.

Vivevi or "Virágos Végtelen Világ" ("Endless World of Flowers") is our collaborative art project with Dominika Tihanyi from the Újirány Group, Nikoletta Szakács and Gábor Lendvai. During the game children can learn about their roots, about ethnicities and about the colorful nature of a nation. The project has been supported by the Hungarian Institute for Culture and Art. Unfortunately the site is only available in Hungarian at the moment, but it is continuously being developed!

The little village of Hegyhátszentmárton is located at the west border of Hungary. In the past few decades, as a result of urbanization, millions have been migrated to the more developed area in the country. The less then 60, mainly elderly inhabitants of Hegyhátszentmárton have lost lots of beloved persons, either in consequence of depopulation or migration. For ten days from the 31th of October 2009 missing family members re-infest the only street of the village. Fifty black balloons impersonate the sometime inhabitants by their portraits printed on two sides. The helium-filled balloons levitate at head-height, placed around their old place but not seriously fixed, so that the living can reset them as they wish. The foto and video documentation is a very important part of the project, especially because we want to investigate how this mystic atmosphere affects on the inhabitants and how they live with the ghost of the beloved ones.

The realisation of the project has been supported by the Hungarian Institute of Culture and Art.
